Mongoose vs Microsoft Foundry
Foundry guards Foundry. Mongoose attacks everything, including Foundry's guards.
Foundry ships a credible in-platform stack: an AI red-teaming agent, guardrails at four intervention points, fleet governance in Control Plane, and hooks into Defender, Purview and Entra. It's strongest inside its own walls. Mongoose is the independent adversarial layer that tests Foundry's controls and everything outside them. It's a second party, not a replacement.

Coverage matrix
Red-team engine
Foundry
AI Red Teaming Agent with 24 attack strategies, including Crescendo, multi-turn and indirect jailbreak.
Mongoose
Adaptive agents over nine attack frameworks and 24 in-house Malagasy modules. They drill deeper where findings appear.
Risk categories tested
Foundry
Content safety (hate, sexual, violence, self-harm, protected material, code vulnerability, ungrounded attributes) plus agentic risks.
Mongoose
Nine categories mapped to the OWASP LLM Top 10, including RAG, multimodal and resource abuse (LLM10), plus identity attacks.
Testing Foundry-hosted agents
Foundry
Prohibited actions, sensitive-data leakage, task adherence and cross-prompt injection against Foundry prompt and container agents with Azure tools.
Mongoose
In developmentTests the model deployments behind Foundry agents today. Testing Foundry Agent Service agents directly, with their tools live, is next.
Agents outside Foundry
Foundry
Not supported for workflow agents, non-Foundry agents, function tools, browser or computer use, connected agents or non-Azure tools.
Mongoose
Any HTTP or OpenAI-compatible endpoint, with multi-turn, agent and identity attacks.
Multi-provider fleet
Foundry
Foundry deployments. Defender AI-SPM can discover AWS Bedrock and Vertex AI, but nothing in the stack attacks them.
Mongoose
OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, AWS Bedrock, Vertex AI, Ollama and custom endpoints in one schema, with baseline regression.
Test realism
Foundry
Agentic tests use synthetic data and mock tools. Leakage and prohibited-action tests are single-turn and English-only.
Mongoose
Real endpoint, real responses, adaptive drill-down, and Deep Scan with 3,000+ variations.
Runtime guardrails
Foundry
Prompt Shields, content filters, PII, task adherence, groundedness and spotlighting, at user input, tool call, tool response and output. Native to the deployment.
Mongoose
Vigilant proxy inspects prompts and outputs, flags undeclared tool calls and PII, and promotes rules from monitor to enforce.
Tool-response inspection at runtime
Foundry
Yes, at the tool-response intervention point (agents, preview).
Mongoose
In developmentVigilant inspecting tool results as their own checkpoint, before the agent acts on them.
Network egress control
Foundry
Egress allowlist for hosted agents (preview).
Mongoose
Coming soonEgress allowlisting for agents.
Agent inventory
Foundry
Control Plane covers Foundry agents, Azure SRE Agent, Logic Apps agent loops and manually registered custom agents, with start, stop and block.
Mongoose
Tenant-wide discovery of Azure AI deployments, plus the Agent Identity registry for agents on any platform.
Agent identity
Foundry
Entra Agent ID: a first-class service principal per agent.
Mongoose
Own registry with signed delegation tokens, an OIDC issuer and a policy broker that can hold an action for a person.
Runtime threat detection
Foundry
Defender alerts for jailbreak, cross-prompt injection, credential leakage, LLM recon and suspicious IPs (preview, published agents only).
Mongoose
Vigilant threat stream with human review and webhook alerts.
Continuous evaluation
Foundry
Scheduled red-team runs and continuous evaluation in Control Plane.
Mongoose
Daily, weekly or monthly schedules with baseline regression tracking.
Posture and misconfiguration
Foundry
Defender AI-SPM: AI bill of materials, attack paths and IaC checks across clouds.
Mongoose
In developmentNative configuration and misconfiguration checks.
MCP server and agent-skill supply chain
Foundry
No equivalent.
Mongoose
Symphony scans MCP servers through four lenses, and agent skills against the OWASP Agentic Skills Top 10.
Mapping to your control catalog
Foundry
Azure Policy and versioned guardrail policies. Not framed around OWASP.
Mongoose
Findings map to your own control and threat catalog as well as OWASP. Unmapped findings say so.
Agent-identity attacks
Foundry
None.
Mongoose
An identity attack category (delegation abuse, confused deputy, owner impersonation), paired with runtime detection.
Evidence handling
Foundry
Adversarial prompts are redacted in cloud results. Attack success is judged by a model and can be non-deterministic.
Mongoose
Each finding carries a deterministic detector match or a judge verdict. The judge is verified before it's trusted, and unvalidated results stay visible.
What Foundry doesn't reach
Everything outside Foundry's walls
Foundry's agentic red teaming doesn't cover workflow agents, non-Foundry agents, function tools, browser automation, computer use, connected agents or non-Azure tools. Most real agents use function tools or MCP. Mongoose tests any endpoint.
An independent check on Foundry's guardrails
Microsoft's red-team agent is graded by Microsoft, with model-judged results it describes as possibly non-deterministic. Mongoose attacks the guardrailed deployment and shows which settings actually hold. Auditors like a second party.
Real conditions, not synthetic
Foundry's agentic tests use synthetic data and mock tools, and its leakage tests are single-turn. Mongoose runs crescendo, refusal erosion, persona drift and context poisoning against the live target.
Attack surface Foundry doesn't test
RAG poisoning and retrieval manipulation, multimodal attacks, resource abuse and wallet drain (LLM10), training-data extraction and identity attacks.
Supply chain before deploy
Symphony scans MCP servers for poisoned tool definitions, command injection and definition drift, and agent skills against the OWASP Agentic Skills Top 10. Foundry has nothing here.
One fleet, every provider
OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, AWS Bedrock, Vertex AI, Ollama and custom endpoints in one schema, with baseline regression. Defender can discover Bedrock and Vertex AI; nothing in Microsoft's stack attacks them.
Your control catalog, not theirs
Findings map to your framework and threat catalog as well as OWASP, and unmapped findings are stated. Microsoft maps to Microsoft's policies.
Where it's stronger, and how the two fit
In an Azure shop, keep Foundry's content filters, Entra identity and Defender alerts. Point Mongoose at the same deployments to verify those controls, and at everything Foundry can't reach: agents on other platforms, MCP servers, RAG pipelines and models on other clouds.
Enforcement inside the platform
Foundry guardrails are native to the deployment, with no proxy hop. Vigilant needs traffic routed through it.
Testing Foundry agents directly
Foundry's red-team agent attacks prompt and container agents with their Azure tools attached. Mongoose tests the model underneath today; a direct Foundry agent target is in development.
Identity and SOC plumbing
Entra Agent ID, Defender XDR alerts and Purview DLP land where an Azure SOC already works.
Posture across clouds
Defender AI-SPM brings an AI bill of materials, attack paths and IaC checks. Native configuration checks in Mongoose are in development.
Use Foundry's guardrails. Use Mongoose to prove they hold, and to test what Foundry can't reach.
Bring one Foundry deployment. A scoped test shows what its guardrails actually stop.
